When is an individual liable for income tax?

Individuals who receive taxable income in excess of a specific mount (known as the “tax threshold” amount) in a year of assessment (tax year) are liable for income tax. The tax threshold amount for the 2013 year of assessment is R67 111 for individuals below the age of 65, R104 611 for individuals aged 65 to 75 and R117 111 for individuals over the age of 75. You can refer to the Tax Pocket Guide for 2013, downloadable from the SARS web site.
